Aselsan Sahin – Anti Drone Weapon From Automatic Grenade Launcher 40mm Velocity Airburst

By using a tire wheel platform and towed, this latest anti-drone device produced in Turkey looks unique. This is the 40 mm Sahin which was recently inaugurated its use as an arsenal in the Turkish Army. Sahin does not work with jamming techniques, but neutralizes threats from drones (including micro drones) through fire from 40 mm caliber munitions.

Quoted from armyrecognition.com (22/7/2022), produced by Aselsan, the 40 mm Sahin was developed to destroy mini and micro drones. Aselsan claims the Sahin is easy to deploy and install to protect critical infrastructure, border security and air defense.

The Sahin is based on a single-axle trailer equipped with a long-range weapon station armed with one 40mm MK19 Mod 3 grenade launcher capable of firing 40mm ATOM ammunition. Sahin is equipped with a target detection and tracking system that can work in all weather conditions day and night.

The 40 mm grenade launcher on the Sahin can carry 64 rounds of munitions and the turret has a 360 degree trajectory with a barrel height from -10 to 60 degrees.

Because it is targeted to face targets in the form of small mini and micro drones, Aselsan designed a 40 mm caliber ATOM munition with High Velocity Airburst Grenade technology. ATOM is an intelligent munition capable of being programmed to the exact time of detonation as it leaves the barrel. Once fired, the programmable axis starts counting down to the explosion at the desired target point. Using pre-fragmented projectiles optimized for the target set, a high hit probability is ensured for destruction on the target.

The ATOM 40 mm High Velocity Airburst Grenade is programmed via the Fire Control Unit and can be integrated into automatic grenade launchers with only minor modifications to the weapon if required. The Fire Control Unit provides the user with viewing and approving targets, measuring the distance to the target, and calculating the time it takes for ammunition to detonate.

The Turkish Army will use the Sahin to destroy rotary-wing and fixed-wing mini-micro drones as well as model aircraft threats at a maximum firing range of 700 meters. It can perform target tracking and ballistic calculations by providing orientation to the position reported from the radar.

Overall, the Sahin 40 mm weight reaches 2,500 kg with a length of 3.72 meters, a width of 2.45 meters and a height of 2.67 meters.
