China Develops Supersonic Flying Submarine Drone, Claims Effectively Destroy Most Advanced Aircraft Carrier

China continues to step on the gas in increasing its military strength. Recently, the Bamboo Curtain Country, through a research team from the Nanjing Aeronautics and Astronautics University, East China, claims to have succeeded in building and testing a prototype of a supersonic flying submarine drone (transmedia vessel).

This supersonic flying submarine drone is considered very effective and efficient in carrying out various military operations, such as inspection of underwater mines and destroying aircraft carriers.

According to professor Ji Wanfeng of Naval Aviation University in Yantai, Shandong province, aircraft carriers or warships are considered to have multiple layers of defense systems that are difficult to penetrate. They are capable of knocking out half of the attacks launched from planes, missiles, or drones.

It takes a massive attack from various platforms to be able to knock out a modern warship (carrier) and it's certainly not effective because it has the potential to run out of ammunition before the enemy has fallen to their knees.

However, that is not the case by combining water and air technology into a flying submarine drone. When the radar detects it, the supersonic submarine drone 'disappears' from the radar by diving deep under the sea.

Vice versa, when the sonar catches the enemy's presence, the supersonic submarine drone rises to the surface and is in close enough combat range to destroy the carrier.

In this way, Ji and his team explain in the journal China Electronics Optics & Control, China's supersonic submarine drone has a 100 percent survival rate assuming a flight speed of 150 km per hour or more. This is considered to be one of the strongest supplements for the Chinese Navy in managing war strategies against the enemy fleet, as quoted from eurasiantimes.com (15/8/2022).

Mentioned, the Chinese flying submarine drone is equipped with two large wings that will fold when in the water. It is also equipped with an airbag on the bottom of the drone to maintain depth. The drone is driven by two propeller engines both at sea and in the air.

The biggest challenge facing the research team was the transition from submarine to flying mode as the ship could not immediately get out of the water due to surface waves and the drone's simultaneous interaction with air and water. This makes the takeoff process unstable and difficult to gain lift.

In fact, the idea of a Chinese flying submarine drone has been thought up since 2010 by the United States through the US Department of Defense Research and Development (DARPA). The difference is, the US used to think about making it manned (not drones) and to bring special operations forces (SOF) in and out of disputed areas secretly. Unfortunately, the US has no signs of realizing the concept.
