China Launches DF-17 Hypersonic Ballistic Missile Directly At Taiwan

Since it was officially shown on the 70th National Day of the People's Republic of China, October 1, 2019, the name DF (Dongfeng)-17 has caught the world's attention, because the DF-17 is a tactical ballistic missile that is claimed to be at the hypersonic speed level.

With hypersonic speed, military analysts believe that this missile can penetrate various anti-hanud (air defense) systems owned by the United States and NATO.

And, in a massive military exercise held by China in response to the visit of the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan on August 2, 2022, then for the first time the DF-17 was tested by fire by being widely shown to the general public.

As if to show off its military muscle to the US and its allies, the launch of the DF-17 has made Taiwan's air defense system extra alert, because the DF-17 launched from Pington (125 km from Taiwan), Fujian Province, is said to have been deliberately launched towards Formosa Island.

From radar imagery, it is known that this missile successfully flew over mainland Taiwan without being intercepted, and eventually fell into the sea.

As the DF-17 crossed Taiwan, a system of alarm sirens sounded to warn citizens of a potential real attack from Mainland China.

By category, the DF-17 is a medium range ballistic missile, although information about this missile is very limited, the US intelligence community estimates the DF-17's range to be between 1,800 and 2,500 kilometers. The launch speed of the DF-17 is said to reach Mach 5.
