Damaging Russian Artillery Attacks, the United States Supplies AN/TPQ-49 Radar to Ukraine

The United States (US) continues to supply advanced defense equipment as well as operations on the front lines of Ukraine's battle with Russia. Recently, under the Presidential Drawdown and USAI program, Uncle Sam's country supplied the AN/TPQ-49 Lightweight Counter Mortar Radar (LCMR) anti-artillery radar.

This radar was first used by Ukraine in 2016 after the annexation of Crimea, which also sparked clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces. Although only supplied by a few, the radar was able to stem the rain of Russian artillery.

Therefore, since the war between Russia and Ukraine began on February 24, the AN/TPQ-49 counter-artillery radar has been relied on by Ukraine and on the contrary, the US sent it much larger than in 2016.

Unlike other counter-artillery radars, such as the Thales Ground Master 200 Multi-Mission Compact radars (GM200 MM/C) which are quite large and are generally transported by truck, the AN/TPQ-49 radar is smaller in size and weighs only 68 kg. It is possible to be transported using a humvee so that the radar mobility is higher.

The radar can be quickly assembled or disassembled by two soldiers in 20 minutes and mounted on a tripod. The accuracy of the AN/TPQ-49 radar is also very high. Within 20 km, the coordinates of the target can be transmitted directly to the tablet of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Air Assault Forces Command tablet.

Interestingly, this radar can detect up to 10 targets, which is claimed to be very useful in counter-battery warfare or counter-battery radar warfare on the front lines, as quoted from en.defence.ua.com (13/8/2022).

Reported by defense24.com (13/8/2022), the AN/TPQ-49 counterfire radar is classified as C-RAM (Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar) equipment. In various operations, this radar is generally used as a complement to the fire finder radar.

This radar can detect early attacks from one or more weapons, howitzers, mortars and rocket launchers while mapping or measuring how strong the attack is to provide an appropriate response.

This attack detection capability comes thanks to the advanced (no rotating) antenna. The antenna is electronically scanned and runs in the L-Band frequency, enabling 360-degree observation and tracking of 3D targets with elevations ranging from 0 to 30 degrees.

In addition, the AN/TPQ-49 radar, which in fact is much more sophisticated, dashing, and high mobility (because it is intended for reconnaissance troops) than its predecessor, the AN/TPQ-48, is capable of detecting the source of the attack so that it is possible to counterattack to disable it. enemy assets.
