Strengthening the Navy, the UK Speeds up the Advanced Heavy Cargo Drone Project with a Capacity of 250 Kg

The British Royal Navy (Royal Navy) will be strengthened by advanced heavy transport drones which are touted as the heavy cargo drones of the future. This assurance was obtained after the British Ministry of Defense (MoD) inaugurated the Uncrewed Air Systems Heavy Lift Capability (UASHLC) program.

In a MoD press statement quoted by ukdefencejournal.org.uk, MoD is of the view that currently the heavy-lift drone market has not yet accommodated their needs. Therefore, the UK through the Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose Heavy Lift Challenge encourages domestic drone manufacturers to develop heavy-lift drones to strengthen their naval fleet.

As the name suggests, the Royal Navy cargo drone or heavy transport drone will later make it easier for the navy to get the logistics they need, without the need to return to the dock. Uncrewed Air Systems (UAS) technology also makes logistics delivery to aircraft carriers and warships more effective and efficient.

Apart from buying foreign drones, the UK also produces its own drones. One of them is Watchkeeper

According to dronewars.net, there are two cargo drones currently under development in the UK; Malloy T-160 and Ultra Windracer or Malloy T-600 drones. Each has the ability to carry weight up to 100kg for long distances and 250kg for short distances.

In its last test run last April, the Malloy T-600 cargo drone successfully flew a payload of 550 pounds or 250 kg over a short distance. The Malloy T-160 cargo drone successfully carried a payload of 220 pounds or 100 kg over a distance of 540 nm. The payload was also successfully dropped on a mock up of the Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier.

"Our intention (in this project) is to ensure that Defense (Navy) is up-to-date in the use of current and future technologies to strengthen the Royal Navy and other areas," the MoD said in a statement.

"The aim of this project is to support and inform the development of the Maritime operations concept and enable the assessment, analysis, exploration, and evaluation of the use of UAS for beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) payload delivery and broader UAS logistics delivery capabilities," he added.

Britain is said to be one of the new powers in the development of drones in the future. Currently, the closest ally of the United States (US) is recorded to use more than 17 drones, such as the MQ-9 Reaper drone made by General Atomics (US), the SkyGuardian Protector made by General Atomics (US), and the Watchkeeper drone made by Thales UK and the Israeli company Elbit. Systems, which is based on the Hermes 450 Elbit drone.

There is also a futuristic drone called the Taranis made by BAE Systems and fully funded by the Ministry of Defence.
