Turkish Navy Completes Sea Trials of MKE 76mm Cannon

There is the latest news from the Ottoman Empire, where the Turkish Navy has successfully completed sea trials of the MKE 76 mm cannon. Turkish state-owned company MKE (Makine Kimya Endüstrisi) has completed sea trials of the domestically developed 76 mm Naval Gun aboard the Burak Class (D'Estienne d'Orves-class aviso) TCG Beykoz (F-503) corvette.

Developed by Turkey's MKE (and 3 subcontracting companies) and Istanbul Naval Shipyard, the 76/62 mm Naval Gun, which is similar in design to the OTO Melara 76 mm SR (Super Rapid) Gun, has successfully passed trials in ports and seas.

Now that the qualification tests have been completed, nothing stands in the way of the decision to mass-produce the Italian equivalent of the Italian OTO Melara cannon.

Many naval vessels of the Turkish Navy (Gabya Class frigates, all FACs, Milgem Class corvettes, etc.) are armed with 76 mm guns. This cannon will be installed on warships equipped with combat management systems (GENESIS/ADVENT).

Reportedly, there are 32 units of warships that will be fitted with cannons made by this nation's children. Therefore, domestic production of these weapons is an important step for the independence of Turkey's defense industry.

The MKE 76 mm gun project began in 2020, and was first shown to the public at the IDEF 2021 Istanbul defense exhibition in August 2021.

From the specifications, the Turkish Naval Gun's MKE 76 mm cannon has a firing range of up to 16 Km with standard munitions. Meanwhile, when using extended range ammunition, the cannon firing range can reach 20 Km.

Carrying a caliber of 76 mm, the length of the barrel reaches 4.7 meters. The gun's rate of fire is 80 projectiles per minute, while the under-mounted magazine capacity provides 70 munitions. This water-cooled cannon for the barrel has an empty weight of 7.5 tons and a full weight of 8.5 tons of ammunition.

This cannon has a barrel elevation angle of -15 to 85 degrees. Horizontal Speed/Acceleration of this turret is said to reach 60-65°/s / 72°/s² and Vertical Speed/Acceleration – 35-40°/s / 72°/s².
