Saab Demonstrates Live Shooting Of Mobile SHORAD At Various Airborne Targets

MSHORAD is Saab's response to a new battlefield era

Since its introduction in September 2017, Mobile SHORAD (Short Range Air Defense) from Saab Bofors Dynamincs, which offers integration of the RBS-70 NG RCWS missile system and Giraffe 1x radar in an armored platform, has attracted worldwide attention. That's because, for the first time, the MANPADS (Man Portable Air Defense System) RBS-70 missile was made in the RCWS (Remote Control Weapon System) launcher module.

And regarding the Mobile SHORAD (MSHORAD) RBS-70 NG RCWS, there is the latest news from the Swedish weapons manufacturer. Quoted from a Saab.com press release (5/9/2022), it was stated that Saab's MSHORAD system was successfully demonstrated in a live shooting moment in front of potential customers from 15 countries.

Located at the test facility in Karlskoga, Sweden, on August 30, 2022 live firing was carried out, five successful shots were fired from the RBS 70 NG Mobile Firing Unit mounted on the MARS-S330 4×4 vehicle against various targets, including drones. and an elevated fuselage/helicopter. 

With RCWS technology, the control system can be carried out in an integrated manner via a computer with a tracking radar, and the opportunity for imposition on targets is greater thanks to multiple launchers.

During one firing scenario, the vehicle mounted sight on the vehicle is removed and reconfigured as a man portable firing unit. In addition, night shooting trials were also carried out against towed targets.

“The combination of the Giraffe 1X radar and the RBS 70 NG Mobile Firing Unit is the perfect match for a close air defense solution with good altitude coverage and detection,” said Stefan berg, Head of Saab business unit Missile Systems.

MSHORAD is Saab's response to a new battlefield era, with growing aerial threats such as the emergence of drones and other advanced aerial weapons. MSHORAD is a vehicle integrated solution that can identify, counter and neutralize air threats quickly, effectively and decisively.

This system consists of a Mobile Radar Unit with a Giraffe 1X radar, which is a type of 3D radar that can detect targets in a 360-degree angle, and a detection range of 75 km.

Then the second system is the Mobile Firing Unit with the RBS 70 NG missile base, all of which are connected to the GBAD (Ground Based Air Defense) C2 communication system to carry out target analysis and coordination of shooting actions.

From the missile specifications, there is no change in the performance of the RBS-70 NG, it's just that in one turret there are three launchers. Even for the guidance system, it still relies on the anti-jamming Line of Sight laser guided missile. The RBS-70 NG carries a Bolide missile capable of Mach 2, and can pursue targets as far as 9 km with an altitude of 5 km.
