Australian Army Announces Initial Operational Capability of Ranpur Rheinmetall Boxer 8×8


The Australian Army (Australian Army) has announced initial operational capability (IOC) for its fleet of 8×8 Boxer wheel tires. This IOC is a milestone under the Land 400 Phase 2 program with a value of US$3.53 billion. 


The IOC was achieved after Australia received the first batch of Rheinmetall's Boxer 8×8 in June last year. Previously, the Australian Army had received six Boxer 8×8 units for testing and training.

The initial operational capability of the Boxer 8×8 fleet was announced by the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Simon Stuart on October 15 yesterday, where Boxers 8×8 from the Army 7th Brigade were deployed in Exercise Sea Raider, namely the engagement of this new mine with the deployment of an amphibious assault ship. – Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) Canberra Class and pontoon bridge.

On 2 June 2021, Rheinmetall of Germany shipped the first batch of 25 Boxer 8×8 units ordered by Australia. The 25 Boxer 8×8 units sent were 12 units of combat reconnaissance variant and 13 units were multipurpose variants. The combat reconnaissance variant will be acquired as many as 131 units and become the largest variant of the total 244 Boxer 8×8 units purchased by the Kangaroo State military.

The procurement of the Boxer 8×8 ranpur is carried out under the Land 400 Phase 2 program with a value of US$3.53 billion. As a form of compensation for technology transfer (ToT) and local industry involvement, the remaining 186 Boxer orders will be made in Australia. Precisely Rheinmetall is building a production facility in Redbank, Ipswich, southwest of Brisbane.

Rheinmetall's production facility at Redbank Australia will be Rheinmetall's largest factory outside Germany. The 186 Boxer units which will be built in Australia consist of combat reconnaissance, command and control, joint fires, surveillance, ambulance and battlefield repair and recovery variants.

The most lethal variant of the Boxer family ordered by the Australian Army will be equipped with the Rheinmetall's digital Lance turret modular turret system with the main gun of the Rheinmetall MK30-2/ABM 30mm caliber cannon. 


In its dome, the canon can release up to 200 ammunition of various types. As a secondary weapon on the barrel there is a 7.62 mm machine gun or a 12.7 mm caliber heavy machine gun.

Under the contract, all Boxer 8×8 orders will be completed for delivery to the Australian Army by 2027. After that, Rheinmetall Australia will continue to provide upgrades and improvements at its facility at Redbank.
