Iranian General: Already 22 Countries Interested In Acquiring Kamikaze Drones (Shahed-136)

Political and business affairs are often intertwined in military operations and conflicts erupt. In the drone segment, for example, the debut of the Bayraktar TB2 produced by Baykar Makina from Tukri, is an interesting example.

When Bayraktar TB2 was involved in many battles and scored a success, then the 'promo' on the battlefield paid off, namely Bayraktar TB2 was ordered by many countries.

The battlefield inevitably becomes a free promotion for defense equipment marketing. Iran's drone-producing aerospace industry seems to have a similar case but not the same as Turkey. As is known, the Shahed-136 is currently a trending topic for the involvement of this kamikaze drone in the air raid on Ukraine.

Although the success rate and accuracy of the Shahed-136 invites controversy, if you hear the 'complaints' from the Ukrainian side for the destruction of various facilities in big cities, it implies that the mission carried out by the Shahed-136, especially in the formation of swarm drones has achieved its goal.

And similar to the case of Bayraktar TB2 which was flooded with orders after its success in the fields of Syria, Libya, Nagorno-Karabakh and Ukraine, now Iran also claims that a number of countries have expressed interest in buying the Shahed-136.

Quoted from eurasiantimes.com (22/10/2022), an Iranian military official revealed that 22 countries seriously submitted formal requests to buy armed drones, including Iranian kamikaze drones. The information was announced during a meeting at Imam Hussein University by Major General Yahia Rahim Safavi, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and a prominent military aide to Iran's Supreme Leader.

Iranian-made drones have garnered a lot of attention for their success against Ukrainian targets over the past few weeks. The deployment of drones in the Russo-Ukrainian conflict has been well documented, leading analysts to conclude that this conflict indicates the start of a new type of warfare.

Rahim Safavi said, "22 countries are asking to buy Iranian drones". He said among those countries are Venezuela, Algeria, Armenia, Tajikistan, Serbia, and other countries that are currently candidates to buy Iranian drones. The top Iranian general also stressed that most of the defense equipment is now locally built, noting that before the Islamic Revolution, Iran relied heavily on imported equipment.

Safavi emphasized by pointing out that one of the unavoidable requirements of modern warfare is the development of a reliable and secure messaging system that can instantly transmit video, voice notes, text and photos.

Although not officially recognized, Iran has "marketed" the Shahed-136 as one of the most instrumental drones, and experts have noted that Russian military operations have benefited from deploying this drone. In another sense, Iranian combat drones can be a good choice for countries that are not US allies or cannot accept Turkish-made drones for various reasons.

While Iranian and Turkish-made drones differ significantly, this does not exclude the possibility that Iranian-made drones will soon pose a significant challenge to Turkish drones in the export market.

The Iranian-made Shahed-136 and Turkish-made Bayraktar TB-2, significantly contributed to the destruction of weapons used by rival forces in the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war.

Turkey's drone export sales increased significantly due to the performance of Bayraktar TB2. It was previously reported that Baykar Makina has signed contracts with 24 countries for the export of the Bayraktar TB2 drone.

Iranian-made drones used by Russian forces demonstrated their effectiveness in Ukraine. On October 19, a Russian kamikaze drone struck an electrical facility resulting in an emergency conference being held by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to prevent what he described as a “damage to the [Ukrainian] energy system.”

Overall, Iran's rise as a drone producer could lead to a new era of drone warfare and improve Iran's position in the world's defense sector, giving it an opportunity to compete head-on with Turkey.
