Slightly different from what has been reported by US media, the ABC News report quoted statements from Ukrainian military officials, in which they were concerned about the dominance of Russian air power in Ukrainian territory.
More specifically, a senior source of Ukrainian military officials revealed that the Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jet had in fact made trouble for air defense in Ukraine.
One of the points of the senior Ukrainian military official's statement was Russia's increasing air dominance over eastern Ukraine. In a briefing last week with journalists, a Western official downplayed those concerns, stating that Russia's ability to control the skies has been limited by its air and surface-to-air missile defenses.
"We don't see any major changes in the situation," said the Ukrainian official. The senior official in Kiev, speaking exclusively to ABC News, said Russia had replaced the older model of the plane with the more modern Su-35. Ukraine "does not have the capability" to counter this threat, the Ukrainian official added.
"(Russia's) air superiority is a real risk," the official said, adding that more air defense systems from the United States and its allies were currently "number one priority" for Ukraine.
Two other Ukrainian officials confirmed that Russia's dominance of the skies over the battle zone was the main problem, with one claiming Russia had "12 times more aircraft" than Ukraine.
"This is a serious problem. What we keep telling the US is that in the end, there is no other solution than giving us (Western) fighter jets," said the Ukrainian official, who wished to remain anonymous.
US President Joe Biden in January had stated that he would not send fighter jets to the Ukrainian military. However, discussions are continuing about the idea, especially between Ukraine and NATO countries. Currently, two Ukrainian pilots have taken part in a flight simulator assessment in Arizona to ascertain how much training they will need if they adapt to Western fighter jets.
Senior Ukrainian officials who spoke to ABC News suggest now seeking US military assistance, with a focus on air defense systems and the provision of artillery ammunition. The official acknowledged that the supply of modern fighter jets, as well as the missiles that go with them, would require a huge budget and that could only come from the United States at the expense of other types of military assistance.
