Airbus Delivers First High-tech Medical Container for the German Armed Forces

The name Airbus is synonymous with the supplier of aerospace products and their related variations. However, through Airbus Defense and Space (ADS), non-aerospace military equipment is also being worked on. As recently, ADS announced it has handed over its first unit of protected-wounded transport containers (GVTC) to the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr).

From an ADS press release received by Indomiliter.com (2/5/2023), ADS has handed over the first of 13 GVTC units to the German Armed Forces. With the delivery of the GVTC, military medics in the field can use GVTC to save lives in containers, which can safely transport sick and injured people to hospitals or field hospitals – and even provide medical care while doing so.

"GVTC containers can enhance the Bundeswehr's rescue chain and the ability to recover, transport and care for the injured in crisis areas," said Harald Mannheim, managing director of Airbus Defense and Space GmbH. “In this sense, GVTC is further proof of how we and our cutting-edge technology help everyone who helps others.”

The first GVTC, delivered on April 20, 2023, will be used as a so-called 'proof-of-concept' vehicle. This means that the Bundeswehr will deploy the containers by training and educating its medical personnel, after which, GVTC will go into serial production. The 12th GVTC is scheduled to be handed over to the Bundeswehr from 2024 to 2026.

GVTC from Airbus Defense and Space is the result of collaboration with partner companies, namely Drehtainer GmbH and Binz Automotive. GVTC is based on the international ISO standard 20ft container. The GVTC container is about 6 meters long and can be easily attached to military trucks via the integrated roll-off hook system. No crane or other special equipment is required.

Inside the GVTC container, there are two paramedics who can provide treatment for up to eight patients. Activities paramedics perform such as monitoring their vital signs and oxygen saturation, performing defibrillator surgery or having patients ventilated through integrated oxygen generation systems.

These medical containers also protect the occupants and the equipment inside from the effects of chemical warfare, are resistant to heavy gunfire and explosions. The power generation units on the GVTC allow hours of standalone operation, while the high performance air conditioning system allows the GVTC to be used in extreme climatic conditions.
