Saab Completes Delivery of New Intelligence Gathering Vessel for Swedish Navy, HSwMS Artemis

After experiencing delivery delays due to disruption to the component supply chain, Saab finally announced on April 28, 2023 the delivery of the new SIGINT (Signals Intelligence) - intelligence gathering ship named HSwMS Artemis, to the Swedish Defense Materials Administration, FMV.

HSwMS Artemis is being prepared as a replacement for the Swedish Navy's current SIGINT ship, HSwMS Orion which has been in service for 35 years. As the newest 'spy' ship, Artemis is equipped with signal intelligence equipment operated by the National Defense Radio Establishment (FRA).

“This is an important day in Saab's history, when the shipyard in Karlskrona delivered its first new ship since Saab's takeover of Kockums ten years ago. Signal Intelligence capabilities are important to Sweden and today is an important milestone,” said Mats Wicksell, Head of Business Area at Saab Kockums, in a press release.

The new ships will have better maneuverability and will provide the Swedish Armed Forces and FRA personnel with a better living environment on board, with higher standards. In addition, its electromagnetic compatibility will be improved. In this case the number of jamming signals made by this ship will actually be reduced.

In addition to signaling to SIGINT equipment installed by FRA, the Artemis HSwMS is equipped with sensors for intelligence for naval purposes.

From the fact sheet, it is stated that the Artemis HSwMS is 74.6 meters long, 14 meters wide and has a gross weight of 3,000 tonnes. This ship is powered by 4 diesel generators with a power of 990kW

At a Glance on the HSwMS Artemis, the first steel cutting of the new intelligence vessel took place in March 2018 followed by the keel laying three months later. The ship was launched at PGZ Stocznia Wojenna in Gdynia, Poland on April 17, 2019. The project was delayed in March 2021 due to Polish shipyard economic difficulties.

HSwMS Artemis will be Sweden's new platform for signal intelligence (SIGINT) and information gathering at sea. It will replace the HMS Orion which has been in service since 1984. Saab previously revealed that the Artemis is longer, taller and wider than its predecessor.

For the record, SIGINT (Signals Intelligence) is the activity of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information from electromagnetic signals, including voice and data communications, which are emitted by various types of devices such as radios, telephones, computers, and other communication equipment.

SIGINT activities are usually carried out by military or intelligence parties to obtain information about the enemy or other parties being observed. Information obtained from SIGINT can be used to gather more complete and accurate intelligence data, estimate enemy strengths and positions, and understand strategies and tactics used by opponents.

SIGINT can also help protect national resources from security threats, such as cyberattacks and electronic espionage. SIGINT activities are becoming increasingly important in the digital age and our ever-increasing dependence on communication technologies.
