Detected! Chinese Navy Builds Five Type 052D Destroyer At The Same Time

China continues to show off its military strength posture, in addition to not stopping to carry out a series of combat drills that are provocative to Taiwan, the Chinese Navy indirectly through social media networks shows the rapid development of its warship fleet. One that was revealed recently was the construction of five Type 052D destroyers simultaneously at the Dalian shipyard dock.

Quoted from Navalnews.com (21/8/2022), A photo on the Chinese microblogging site Weibo by the account @lyman2003 shows five Type 052 hulls at various stages of completion at the Dalian shipyard, in the North China region. For information, Dalian shipyard launched the Type 052D and Type 055 destroyers on the same day two years ago.

With such a speed of development, the Chinese Navy seems to assert its status as the "world's largest" naval power. According to data from the Pentagon, China's shipbuilding industry broke the record launch of 10 destroyers in 2019 with 8 more in 2021.

Two Chinese military observers confirmed that currently there are 25 class destroyers that have been operated by the Chinese Navy, consisting of 13 Type 052D and 12 Type 052DL. They will soon be joined by five under construction in Dalian and (at least) one under construction at Jiangnan Changxing Shipbuilding and Heavy Industry Corporation (another Chinese shipyard building large surface combatants, located Northeast of Shanghai).

The new “DL” variant features a stretched hull and all new Type 052 destroyers are expected to be built in the “DL” variant.

Type 052D

The Type 052D Kunming-class (NATO designation: Luyang III) is one of the latest generation of the Chinese Navy's guided-missile destroyer (DDG). This type of destroyer is based on its predecessor, the Type 052C DDG and may share the same hull.

But the Type 052D incorporates many improvements in terms of design as well as sensors and weapons. The Type 052D is considered the equivalent of the United States AEGIS destroyer.

The Type 052D is intended to operate on the high seas and has almost the same platform as its predecessor, the Type 052C, but has a more advanced combat system.

The Type 052D is equipped with a total of 64 vertical launch system (VLS) cells for HHQ-9 guided missiles, Yu-8 rocket-propelled ASW torpedoes and YJ-18 anti-ship cruise missiles.

Four modules are positioned at the front of the ship in front of the superstructure, the other four at the rear, in front of the helicopter hangar. The destroyer is also armed with the H/PJ-45A 130mm main gun, the H/PJ-12 30mm CIWS (8 first ships in class equipped with the older variant: H/PJ11), the HQ-10 short-range SAM and two destroyers. . triple torpedo launcher.

The robust sensor suite comprises Type 346A, Type 364, Type 366, Type 517B and Type 760 radars, SJD-9 hull-mounted sonar and SJG-311 variable depth sonar.

The “DL” variant was introduced from the 14th ship in its class, the Zibo with hull number 156. The hull of the Type 052DL is about 4 meters longer than the Type 052D, this extra length is mainly for the needs of the hangar and helicopter deck at the stern of the ship. Modifications were introduced to accommodate the new Z-20 helicopter.
