Germany Delivers 155mm Vulcano Guided Munitions To Ukraine, Part Of Self Propelled Howitzer PzH 2000

Flashback to last April, it was reported that two NATO countries, namely the Netherlands and Germany, would send heavy artillery aid to Ukraine. This means the Self Propelled Howitzer PzH 2000 which will be sent from the Netherlands, while the munitions and training will be prepared by Germany.

And continuing the news of the delivery of PzH 2000 to Ukraine, there is information that the ammunition provided for the PzH 2000 is a type of Vulcano precision-guided artillery shells caliber 155 mm.

The name Vulcano feels foreign to netizens, quoted from the German publication Welt am Sonntag, it is stated that the German government has approved the sale of 255 high-precision Vulcano 155 mm guided artillery munitions to Ukraine. However, no exact delivery date has yet been set. For information, Vulcano munitions are made by German (Diehl Defense) and Italian (Leonardo) companies.

The 155mm Vulcano is a family of sub-caliber munitions for 155 mm ground artillery systems, the projectile types consist of unguided munitions called BER (Balistic Extended Range) and guided projectiles called GLR (Guided Long Range). The outline of the Vulcano munitions is almost identical to that of conventional munitions, which allows them to be handled without the additional logistical burden.

The Vulcano 155 GLR is prepared for long-range, high-accuracy fire support against stationary and moving point targets with significantly reduced collateral damage. Designed with outstanding aerodynamics, coupled with GPS guidance and track shaping capabilities, allow the Vulcano 155 GLR to reach a maximum range of 70 km while maintaining extreme accuracy of less than 5 meters in all operational ranges.

The Vulcano 155 GLR munition is loaded with IM (Insensitive munitions) explosives and is made of a special tungsten ring that allows for extremely high effectiveness against soft and lightly protected targets; the detonation trigger is generated by a radio frequency programmable fuse capable of performing a variety of functions, such as altimetric, momentary and delayed impact.

When the radio frequency fuse is replaced with a dedicated Semi-Active Laser (SAL) sensor, munitions can also effectively strike laser-defined targets (forward observer required), stationary and moving, with even greater precision with respect to pure GPS guidance.

In addition, it is possible to program the projectile's final angle of attack of up to 90 degrees (i.e., vertical fall) against the target allowing the maximization of warhead effectiveness and guidance accuracy, as well as minimizing the possibility of detection of the projectile's direction of arrival by enemy radar.

Vulcano 155 munitions, both BER and GLR types, are eligible under the relevant STANAG under the joint supervision of the Italian and German Ministries of Defense.

Still related to the delivery of artillery weapons to Ukraine, Germany is reportedly also preparing to send the COBRA counter-artillery radar (weapon location radar) and the IRIS-T air defense system.
