As if answering the rumors that have been circulating since the beginning of the year, the Iranian Air Force has finally stated that it has decided to acquire 24 Sukhoi Su-35 fighter jets from Russia, where the Su-35 fleet that will be received by Iran comes from a former Egyptian order which was canceled due to Washington's pressure on Cairo over the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) sanctions.
The confirmation of the purchase of the Sukhoi Su-35 was conveyed by the Iranian Air Force Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Amid Hamid Vahedi in an interview with the Iranian Borga Agency – borna.news.
He stated that there are no plans to purchase the Su-30, and that Iran and Russia are currently discussing the purchase of the Su-35. Even so, Vehedi said the final decision on the procurement of the Su-35 rests with the General Staff Command of the Iranian Armed Forces.
Some sources said that Iran will acquire 24 units of the Su-35SE variant, which came from an Egyptian Air Force order which was canceled due to US pressure.
Meanwhile, for modernization needs, the Iranian Air Force wants at least 24 Su-35 units. For the record, Egypt ordered 24 Su-35 units from Russia, with several units reportedly having arrived in Egypt.
Relations between Russia and Iran have recently become increasingly cordial, especially since Iran has supplied thousands of combat drones and kamikaze drones to Russia.
In January 2022, Iran's Mehr News Agency, reported that Russia was ready to sell Su-35 fighter jets to Iran. Tehran will sign a 20-year agreement on military-strategic cooperation with Russia next month.
According to the Mehr News Agency, the agreement will include the purchase of US$10 billion worth of Russian weapons, including S-400 guided missiles, satellites and former Egyptian Su-35 fighter jets.
