Roketsan Bora – Turkish Ballistic Missile Involved in the Syrian War

Roketsan has a big name as an arms manufacturer from Turkey, and from the various types of weapons that have been released, one that may be overlooked is Roketsan's ability to design and manufacture tactical ballistic missiles.

Not just a discourse, and also no longer a prototype, since 2018 Roketsan has launched the Bora Tactical Ballistic Missile, which incidentally has now been used by the Turkish Army Artillery.

As a tactical ballistic missile, the Bora is 8 meters long, 610 mm in diameter – a wingspan of 10 meters – and weighs 2,800 kg. Powered by a ramjet engine with composite solid fuel propellant, the Bora can accelerate at Mach 5. Flying at high altitude levels, the Bora has an accuracy of 10 – 12 meters.

Relying on GPS+, GLONASS and Aided INS-based guidance systems, the Bora has a range of 280 – 700 Km, which in fact makes the Bora the longest-range missile that Turkey has made today. From its weight of 2,800 kg, the weight of the warhead (HE or fragmentation) reaches 570 kg.

Designed since 2009, the current Bora has produced more than 800 units, and has been used by Turkey in the civil war in Syria.

Although it has not yet reached the export market, Roketsan has released an export variant of the Bora which is labeled Khan. The Khan missile has the same length as the Bora, but differs in the weight of several specifications that are 'lowered'.

Call it the Khan's weight of 2,500 kg, and its cruising range is in the range of 80 - 250 Km. Khan's warhead weight (high explosive) is 470 kg which is triggered via point detonating and proximity.

Both Bora and Khan were launched from the Volat 8×8 truck platform. In the fact sheet, Roketsan said Khan has the ability to be prepared in a short time, high accuracy, low collateral damage and anti-jamming/anti-spoofing solutions. A longer-range version of Bora 2 is currently in development.
