Poland Selects K239 Chunmoo – Self Propelled MLRS Multi Caliber Made in South Korea

K239 Chunmoo carries two launch pods capable of firing rockets of different calibers

Although Poland is a neighbor to the Czech Republic, and a fellow member of NATO, there is news that Poland is actually eyeing a multi-caliber rocket launcher - the MLRS (Multiple Launch Rocket Systems) produced by South Korea, the K239 Chunmoo.

Instead of glancing at the Excalibur Army MLRS from the Czech Republic, according to information from Defense24.com on 27 August 2022, Polish Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak announced that Poland would acquire the K239 Chunmoo MLRS from South Korea.

The closeness between Poland and South Korea has surfaced in recent times, especially after Poland decided to buy a South Korean defense equipment package, worth US$14.5 billion, which includes 180 K2 Black Panther Main Battle Tanks (MBTs), 48 FA light fighter jets. -50 Fighting Eagles and 670 Self Tracked Propelled Howitzer K9 Thunder.

About K239 Chunmoo, is a self propelled MLRS designed and manufactured by Hanwha Corporation, and is recognized as a new generation artillery weapon capable of firing various caliber rockets.

The K239 Chunmoo carries two launch pods capable of firing rockets of different calibers. It can fire 130 mm caliber K33 unguided rockets (20 rockets to each pod), 227 mm unguided rockets (6 rockets to each pod), and 239 mm guided rockets (6 rockets to each pod). 

The 130 mm rocket has a range of 36 km, while the larger 230 mm caliber rocket has a range of about 80 km for the unguided and 160 km for the guided variant.

K239 Chunmoo

The 239 mm rocket has a length of 3.96 meters and is guided by GPS/INS with two modes of operation, namely impact bursting to fight personnel and delay bursting to destroy bunkers.

Two different types of rocket pods can be loaded at once and the modular case can be reloaded quickly. The K239 Chunmoo adopts the Doosan Infracore K239L 8×8 truck chassis with an armored cab for a crew of 3 from small arms fire and artillery splinters, as well as NBC protection.

Each Chunmoo launcher is paired with a K239T Ammunition Support Vehicle (ASV) using the same truck chassis that carries four reload pods. One battery (company) of K239 Chunmoo of the South Korean Army consists of 18 vehicles and uses the K200A1 as a command and control vehicle.
