Arquus Bastion 4×4 – Armored Rantis Transports French Production Personnel, Looks Like Barracuda at a Glance

After sending the self-propelled CAESAR 155 mm howitzer and the Arquus VAB 4×4 to Ukraine, there is news that France will again send other military equipment to Zelensky Country.

However, what was sent by France this time was not the type of assault defense equipment, but the Bastion 4×4 armored personnel carrier (APC) which, when compared, was no more powerful than the 4×4 Barracuda APC rantis operated by the Brimob Police Corps.

Quoted from armyrecognition.com (3/10/2022) which refers to the news in the French newspaper La Tribune, it is said that the French manufacturer Arquus is reported to be sending 20 units of Bastion armored rantis, where a contract is being concluded between Arquus which is owned by a Swedish group. Volvo with the French Ministry of Defence.

Bastion is a 4×4 Armored Personnel Carrier (APC) designed and developed by the French company ACMAT, which is now part of Arquus several years ago. The Rantis is based on the chassis of the ACMAT VLRA TDN/TDE multi-role tactical vehicle which has been recognized as a tough vehicle.

In the APC configuration, the Bastion is manned by two, the driver and commander, and can accommodate up to eight infantrymen seated at the rear of the hull. This Rantis offers ballistic protection in standard STANAG 4569 level 1 to level 3, which is prepared to be able to withstand the impact of light caliber projectiles and artillery shrapnel.

Bastion integrates a V-shaped monocoque hull made of high-strength armored steel, which increases the survivability of the vehicle and passengers by diverting the upward blast effect of the landmine or IED away from the vehicle.

The Bastion can be equipped with various types of weapon stations for installation of a 12.7 mm caliber heavy machine gun or a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher.

The Bastion APC is powered by a 5.0L intercooled turbo diesel engine that produces 215 hp at 2,300 rpm coupled to a manual or automatic transmission. Bastion weighing 12 tons can travel at a maximum road speed of 110 km per hour, and a maximum cruising range of 1,000 km.

Although the design is simple, Bastion is apparently classified as an armored model that is selling well in the export market. Relying on the big name of France, Bastion was acquired quite a lot by African countries, including for the needs of the police.

Outside of Africa, Bastion is also used by Saudi Arabia, Sweden and Kosovo. In 2018, Arquus signed a production contract with AM General for Bastion as an armored ambulance for the US Army.
