Roketsan: Indonesia Becomes First User of 'Khan' Hypersonic Short Range Ballistic Missile


The Indo Defense 2022 event has inscribed several contracts from the Indonesian Ministry of Defense for weapons manufacturers from within and outside the country. One of the news came from Roketsan, the defense equipment manufacturer from the Ottoman State announced the results of its participation in Indo Defense 2022, namely by saying that Indonesia would be the first country to use Khan's tactical ballistic missiles.


Quoted from Defensenews.com (8/11/2022), Roketsan has signed a contract with the Indonesian Government to supply Khan missiles and multilayer air defense systems. This is the first time the Khan missile system, which is an export version of the Bora ballistic missile, will enter an arsenal other than the Turkish military.

Speaking to Turkish media, Deputy General Manager of Roketsan, Murat Kurtulus, emphasized the importance of the Southeast Asian market for the company. 

"We will soon put our first product into the service of the Indonesian Ministry of Defense thanks to the contract we have signed," said Kurtulus. 

He added that the Khan missile system has significant capabilities with a range of 280 kilometers and high precision on the battlefield. "The Indonesian military will be the first foreign users of the system," said Murat.

Although he did not explain in detail, Murat Kurtulus also noted that Roketsan would develop an air defense system specifically made for the Indonesian Army.

“The second contract is about a layered air defense system. The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Indonesia has different requirements in this regard. We have created a new model in collaboration with our international business partners, to present the first layered air defense system product, namely as two separate medium-range and long-range systems. In the coming months, we will also discuss close air defense systems," Kurtulus explained.

Roketsan officials did not disclose additional information about the layered air defense system, and the company declined to answer questions about the contract value and delivery schedule.

According to Roketsan's specifications, the Khan missile can be launched from a multi-barreled rocket launcher on an eight-wheel drive vehicle. According to customer requirements, it can also be launched from other tactical wheeled vehicles.

The Khan missile has a range of 280 km, belonging to the short-range ballistic missile segment which weighs about 2.5 tonnes. This missile carries a high explosive warhead weighing 470 kg, it is said that the effect of this missile explosion can reach a radius of 100 meters. 

The Khan missile is controlled via aerodynamic control with an electromechanical actuation system, and is supported by GPS technology and an inertial guidance system. Another capability of the Khan missile is its anti-jamming and anti-GPS spoofing properties.


As a tactical ballistic missile, the Khan has a length of 8 meters, a diameter of 610 mm – a wingspan of 10 meters. Powered by a ramjet engine with composite solid fuel propellant, the Khan missile can travel at speeds of Mach 5. Flying at a high altitude level, the Khan missile has an accuracy of 10 – 12 meters. The 'original' variant, namely the Bora missile, has been used by the Turkish military in attacks on Syrian territory.
