China Shows CETC YLC-12C – Specialized Drone Detection and Disabling Radar C Band

Although initially often underestimated, however, several recent incidents have proven that small drones that fly low and travel slowly can penetrate even sophisticated and dense air defense systems. Apart from the incident that occurred near Moscow, don't forget that South Korea was also embarrassed by the incident where a reconnaissance drone from North Korea flew deep into Seoul.

Departing from incidents related to drones with the characters above, the main challenge lies in the radar system which must be able to effectively detect these small, low-flying drones.

And recently, China as one of the drone champion countries has displayed a type of drone specifically designed to fight drones and stealth capable aircraft. What is meant is the YLC-12C Medium-to-low-altitude Multifunctional C-Band Radar, which was officially introduced at The 10th World Radio Detection and Ranging Expo in Beijing on April 13, 2023.

The 10th World Radio Detection and Ranging Expo (World Radar Expo) is a three-day world radar exhibition, where China's leading defense companies demonstrate their solutions against some of the world's most challenging air threats including drones and stealth aircraft.

In the Ukraine crisis, the world again witnessed the high potential of using drones in modern warfare, as drones have become one of the biggest threats to air defense because they are often low-flying, slow, and small – not to mention cheap. The problem is, conventional radar systems designed to engage traditional aircraft tend to fail to detect these drones.

To counter the drone threat, China Electronics Technology Group Corp (CETC) displayed for the first time a monitoring radar system with communication jamming capabilities.

The YLC-12C's radar system can track, locate, and jam remote control signals from enemy drones, which will suffer from weakened commands, reduced information transmission efficiency, and low navigational accuracy.

Quoted from the Global Times, the YLC-12C is said to be able to deceive drones and make them go off course or land. This system can be installed on off-road vehicles, mounted on land, mounted on ships or carried by infantry, because it can carry out multi-method detection in different terrain. complex and electromagnetic environment.

CETC also offers a three-sided array low-altitude monitoring radar capable of engaging low-flying, slow and small targets. Thanks to its state-of-the-art digital array technology, the radar can simultaneously detect and track low-flying cruise missiles, fighter aircraft and small, even minuscule, drones.

Carried by a 6×6 truck-class carrier, the YLC-12C radar can be placed in key positions around cities, nuclear plants and large population centers, its developers say. The YLC-12C C-band multifunction radar is characterized by an adjustable antenna that can be raised up to 18 meters high, which also helps to spot low-flying targets such as drones.
