Although in appearance nothing looks new, Embraer, an aerospace manufacturer from Brazil, has officially launched a new variant of the Super Tucano turboprop light attack aircraft, namely the A29N Super Tucano, which was launched at the 2023 LAAD Defense & Security event in Rio de Janeiro, 11 – 14 April 2023.
The A-29 Super Tucano is a light attack, armed reconnaissance, and advanced training aircraft, offered in a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) configuration, with an initial focus on meeting the needs of countries in Europe.
Embraer said in a press release that the new version of the aircraft, the A-29N, would include equipment and features to meet NATO operational needs, such as a new datalink and single pilot operations.

These features will further increase the working possibilities of the aircraft, enabling, the use of the A-29N in JTAC (Joint Terminal Attack Controller) training missions. The training sets will also be upgraded to the most recent standards in the world, including the adoption of virtual reality, augmented reality and a mix of the two.
“This is a new stage in the operations of the Super Tucano family,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense and Security. “We see many possible applications for the A-29N at this time. Several European countries have shown interest in the special aircraft capabilities we have now introduced with this version.”
EMB-314 Super Tucano arrived in Indonesia shortly, still with a Brazilian flight number.
With over 260 units delivered worldwide, the Super Tucano has been selected by more than 15 air forces worldwide, including the United States Air Force (USAF) and Indonesia which operates the EMB-314 Super Tucano variant by the Indonesian Air Force's 21st Squadron.
Developed as a highly versatile aircraft, the A-29 Super Tucano can perform a variety of missions, including light attack, aerial surveillance and interception, and counter-insurgency. The A-29 Super Tucano can operate from short, unpaved runways on front-line operational bases with little support, all with low operating costs and high availability (above 90%).
In addition to the combat role, the Super Tucano is widely used as an advanced training aircraft. Its ability to simulate combat missions and upload and download flight data makes it a very effective training platform.
The A-29N Super Tucano is equipped with a variety of advanced sensors and weapons, including an electro-optical/infrared system with a laser designator, night vision goggles, secure voice communications and a data-link package.
For the record, although the appearance and name of the aircraft are the same, the Super Tucano is distinguished by the A-29 and EMB-314 codes. In short, if the EMB-314 is a direct production from Embraer, Brazil. Meanwhile, the A-29 was built by Sierra Nevada, a US-based defense contractor based in Jacksonville, Florida. In addition, the A-29 also adopted avionics from Elbit Systems of America.
